I'd really like to show the thumbstrip in my Highslide Slideshow as per CE3 - is this feature no longer available?

I don't believe that was ever a feature of Highslide. (oops. wrong)
But you can do that with the Galleria slide show in CE4 Stage though.

Hi Matthew, I really hope you will implement again the thumbstrip to the CE4 gallery, it was a really elegant way to display the photos. I'm really sad and angry that it's not here anymore.

It has been perpetually buggy, so it's not likely to return. I was never happy with it as it was, and I'm not willing to spend any more time on fixing what seems to be a futile problem.
