Are galleries numbered in the order in which they are uploaded or do I have control over the numbering (and therefore the order of appearance) of galleries I upload. For instance, I have four galleries uploaded and add a fifth which I would like to appear as the first gallery on my galleries page. Is that possible, or must it appear after the four galleries I previously uploaded?

the galleries will appear in standard alpha numeric order. So name (or number) them so they appear in the order you wish:
01-gallery-x
02-gallery-a
03-gallery-m
you can rename them after the fact too. If uploading via FTP, just change the name of the folder. If using publisher, change the name of the slug.
