I do not see any use to the permalink icon in the slide show mode. Since it takes the viewer out of the slide show mode, I think if a viewer accidentally click on it, they will get confused.

But the purpose of the permalink is so that your viewers can more easily share an image of yours with the wider world

The permalink has many purposes, for search engine optimization, for social media, for bookmarking a specific image ... You think what you think, but I promise I've thought about it more than you. The permalink is a good thing and it belongs on the page.
