having .html in address ... and more

Hi all

I recently attended a seminar on SEO and the teacher said that each gallery should have .html address RATHER than just a folder_name/

I am using Auto Index in combination with Stage and at present, your Flash style Simple Viewer - "embedded" in my site and host domain at BlueHost. (still on the fence as to whether to continue with the Flash style or switch to html style galleries - hopefully one that would than would make it less easy for people to download the images.)

Currently the software seems to generate (prefer?) these addresses.

question1.
Is this kind of address preventing "perfect" SEO and search Hits?

question 2.
What would your favorite html gallery recommendations be to use within LR4 - customizable ones? I may try adding a cart and possibly redo my older site which is need of an update using PAGES when I get the time.

Question 3. PS sorry another topic...
Is there a documented workflow for using the plugins and uploading them? If I don't do it for awhile it always takes me 2 or 3 tries to get it all to work because I have forgotten or missed a step and have to go back and reupload evertyhing several times to get it right smile

Thanks in advance.

Ed

Hi Ed,

Most pages output by ttg plugins are php (Pages, Stage, etc). The Highslide gallery can be output as html if you don't use any of the features that require php. If you do, then they're output at php. (that may be true as well for Photoswipe and Horizon, I haven't checked)

The Highslide, Photoswipe, and Horizon galleries are all customizable. If you want to use the cart, you'll need at least one of those.

take a look at the Orientation. There's also a link in that document to a Beginner's guide that should go a long way in answering your workflow questions

Re: having .html in address ... and more

Q1: No, I really don't think so. There's a lot of misinformation about SEO, and it's a constantly moving target, so always difficult to nail down a set of hard rules. But this just sounds stupid to me. It would mean that more than half the Internet is "broken" by default.

And the reason the auto index handles URLs as it does is because gallery pages can be either HTML or PHP. If the index specified one or the other file type, then galleries not of that type would return 404 errors. By targeting the folder, we catch both.

Q2: The Highslide gallery is the most popular.

Q3: As Rod says.

Thank you both for your succinct and quick repiles! Makes it easier to get in the mood to go to work and actually do this..

Apparently these days MANY (most?) photo buyers, art directors, etc are looking for photography works through internet searches. So hope to get more stuff out there.

BTW, the seminar teacher did mention that SEO "it is changing all the time"

Best

Re: having .html in address ... and more

regarding the Highslide paid plugin - Before I buy it I wonder if it is possible to turn off the "Download" button that appears in the bar at the upper right hand corner. Doesn't look there is a trial version to test customizing it. (I realize its not very expensive, but there were some things about the styles that I don't like on the demo gallery site)

Nearly everything is customizable to some extent, can be turned on or off, etc.
