#51 Re: CE4 Publisher » How to integrate Publisher with existing web site » 2015-04-11 23:09:53

Thanks Ben.

Anything would do or I am 85 USD down the pan.

All I wanted was to create web folders faster and Rod said that Publisher did it far, far faster.

I don't want all the other gubbins of Auto Index and Pages. I only bought them as it was not a lot more money than the basic Publisher. I had no idea that Publisher needed an internet connection simply to make web folders and I am very nervous about putting this extra software on my FTP server when I don't understand it.

Rod has just said "if you choose to use Publisher to create new albums, you'll need to alter your folder structure somewhat by adding a top-level folder to the root of the site for Publisher to use. All future albums will be in that folder." I don't want to do that and it sounds a recipe for problems with some of the site in one top level folder and others in another top level folder.

So, yes, what is the simplest way to trick Publisher to thinking it is seeing the internet, please? I don't want it 'to manage galleries'. I do that with Frontpage - it may not be overtly pretty but at least I understand it.

Tony
PS. I also hate Lightroom catalogues. I don't need them and delete mine weekly!!

Publisher needs to be connected to your site.

So, to confirm, I cannot use the web creation facility within it if I my computer has no internet connection?

I was grumbling about Lightroom's slowness in creating web folders yesterday and Rod suggested I buy Publisher as it was far faster.

I bought the full Web Publishing package having learnt about the benefits of Auto Index and Pages.

I've just looked at that installation video and it talks about creating a whole new 'gallery'. No doubt it will give me benefits of indexing and continuity of style - but neither are to me a problem.

The video also assumes that the Lightroom being used to create the web folders is on a computer connected to the internet. Mine is not. I create my folders on a machine in my studio that has no phone line. I port them on a USB stick to this machine and upload them to my FTP server. I use this machine to create the hyperlink to the appropriate menu and upload the new menu.

My main web site menu is http://www.tonygamble.org/hurllist/

Every folder on my FTP server is within a folder called public_html

I am somewhat scared about installing anything I have bought on to my FTP - particularly creating a new 'gallery' when my existing one contains 1,119 folders - all linked into one of about six menus.

I may thus have bought far more than I need. So be it - my fault for not looking at the installation video first.

But can I get the benefit of faster web folder creation without needing to tinker with my FTP site and start a new gallery on top of the ones I already have?

#54 Re: CE4 Gallery » Does anyone use LightZone rather than Lightroom. » 2015-04-10 22:40:21

Thanks Rod.

I'll buy it today.

I have CE4 Gallery.

I could buy the Web Publishing Bundle.

I'm using Microsoft Front Page for my main index page. Maybe CE4 Pages would be better.

But I reckon I don't need Auto Index and Viewpoint Sizer so it's better for me to Publishing and Pages separately rather than the full bundle.

I thought you were asking whether I would ever want to develop plugins for Lightzone ...

No. That was not in my mind at all.

I was just wondering whether Lightzone might be a trimmer, and consequently faster, front end.

I have never timed how long it takes LR to create a web folder of around 100 images. My guess is about five minutes so I find something else to do on the PC. What is annoying is when I make a silly mistake, such as including one wrong image or spelling the heading wrong. Re-making the folder involves starting from scratch so that is another five minutes.

Not to worry though. There is always something needing doing and the time gets filled.

Thanks Matthew for looking.

I'll get a copy installed and see if it works.

I do find the web function of LR slow and that is all I use it for. I convert my RAWs with Qimage.

I have been looking for alternatives that will support TTG plugins.

I have no idea whether LightZone will so I will have to experiment.

But any view from round here will be much appreciated.

Thanks Rod.

Done at:-

I get the reduced (Menu) text on the S4 phone and the full view on the Samsung 7.7.

Just looked at my site on a tablet.

How do I keep the Navigation vistible all the time and not get those horizontal lines as an alternative. Please?

#61 Re: CE4 Gallery » Two questions about a new attempt on a folder » 2014-12-21 01:54:51

You are right Rod. It was the cache.

I should have photographed it for your info/interest. I had a column of yellow dots at the top left and also an 'x'.

Gone now.

Yes I have got Times New Roman Serif with the cleared cache and it is centred. It was at the left and certainly the wrong type. I must be stricter about clearing the cache.

I think I am probably home and dry now.

When I first started using TTG I used to put three lines of text telling people how to use the folder - my feeling is that most people now know their way around a folder on a tablet and those who don't probably never bothered to read my info.

Many thanks.

OK Rod I am almost there.

My LR display shows me this:-

http://www.tonygamble.org/ttgtest1/capture.jpg

But from my web server I am getting this:-

http://www.tonygamble.org/ttgtest1/

Several questions.

What is that clutter at the top left coming from?
Why have I lost my Times New Roman serif?
Why am I no longer centred?

Crack those and I reckon I have what I need. I put a second hyperlink at the top but most times I will not need it.

#63 Re: CE4 Gallery » Two questions about a new attempt on a folder » 2014-12-20 23:10:40

Thanks Rod,

I'll look at it in an hour.

I did look at ph plugins this morning and felt it was probably not the route for me as:-

1. It seemed that they needed something extra at the server and maybe mine does not support them and

2. It required a bit of extra program learning  which I am not against but it might be a bit of overkill.

I'll look at your latest idea in a moment.

#64 Re: CE4 Gallery » Two questions about a new attempt on a folder » 2014-12-20 17:56:38

Thanks Rod,

I'll try some of those ideas this afternoon.

Having said I only want/need one hyperlink back to a menu I might some time want a couple (to different start points).

So it would be good to have something a bit more flexible.

I may come back to you later in the day.

#65 Re: CE4 Gallery » Two questions about a new attempt on a folder » 2014-12-20 07:58:05

Thanks Rod,

I see about the thumbnails. And they are only references to the larger versions. My clients flick through the thumbs when I am with them as a way of quickly getting to the frames they want to discuss.

Any views on a better way of dealing with my yellow text? Another way of coding it and a way of forcing it to the top?

I was pleasantly surprised at how making a template in CE4 Gallery seemed simpler than CE3. Well done Matthew and Rod.

My first bash is at http://www.tonygamble.org/ttgtest1/

The yellow 'To return to.....' text is from something keyed in to Content/Description in HTML. Is there a better place I can create this line of text so that the adding of a hyperlink is more intuitive?

And can I move it above the main text where I am saying 'Test of....' and my yellow line that gets me back to my master menu is at the top of the page? Then maybe I can remove some of the padding so my thumbs start closer to the heading?

Second question. Why are my thumbs showing with very little border on my Samsung S4 phone and with much more border than I see on my PC on my Samsung 7.7?

I'll try to post two screen shots:-
http://www.tonygamble.org/ttgtest1/Samsung%20s4-1.jpg
http://www.tonygamble.org/ttgtest1/Samsung%207.7-1.jpg

It is not a big problem but I'd like to learn what causes it please.

Other than that everything seems to work as I want. Well done again M & R.

I may not respond immediately as I am based in the UK and it is getting late - but I'll pick up any suggestions tomorrow.

#67 Re: CE4 Gallery » If I need to revert back to CE3 Gallery - what do I do? » 2014-12-16 01:33:02

I converted a batch of 37 jpgs to a TTG web folder in LR3 and it took 2 mins 46 secs.

The same template (a CE4 one) took only 2 mins and 12 secs in LR4.

I was surprised but it does mean that I will immediately work with LR4.

#68 Re: CE4 Gallery » If I need to revert back to CE3 Gallery - what do I do? » 2014-12-13 17:49:06

Thanks Matthew,

Presumably CE4 runs on LR3?

I don't use LR to Develop as I use Qimage for my RAWs. I add a touch of contrast, saturation and sharpen, with LR3 as it is my view that the converting to web does degrade my jpgs a bit. But that is all I need from LR and I even delete the catalogues regularly as I hate the way it blocks the re-use of a file in a new group of images.

I'll test the speed, assuming the answer to the above was Yes, and if the timing is strongly in favour of LR3 I'll revert to it - and post my results here.

No I would never go back to Photoswipe. Your new system seemed stable on the various devices I tried yesterday and that's what I need.

It is interesting (and to me odd) that there is still nothing in jAlbum that offers a decent swipe. I tried everything on offer from them about a year ago and drew a blank. For interest I spent a bit of time earlier this week looking around and there is still nothing there that is not flawed in one way or another. So Well Done Matthew. You have cornered the market for people needing swipe and not wanting to commit themselves to specific servers.

I did find another web creator that offered swipe - but it seems that does not work when a tablet/phone is held in portrait mode. So that is useless for me and anyway the amount of control it offers on page design is extremely crude.

Thanks for your interest Matthew.

I like the new Touch - so far anyway.

I loaded it into LR4 v4.2

Previously I ran it under LR3 and I think that was faster converting the web pages.

I know LR4 was a problem initially. Does anyone have a view on whether I'd be better to go back to LR3?

I am sure that the replacement of Photoswipe will fit my needs but if it didn't for some odd reason can I save my CE3 set up and templates please?

#72 Re: CE4 Gallery » Import settings from CE3 to CE4 » 2014-12-12 18:36:05

I also raised this a while ago.

Has anyone found a quick way of emulating the settings? So much of what I did with CE3 was trial and error.

One person said 'take screen shots' of the various menus.

Any other ideas before I take the plunge?

#74 Re: CE4 Gallery » CE3 LR User Templates » 2014-07-22 23:55:15

Is there a way of printing out what is in the old templates?

I evolved mine by a series of many 'hit and miss' attempts. Any reference to the old template instructions would be better than nothing.

It is what is putting me off upgrading - not the money!
