Hi Matt,
For those of us who don't want to "dump Lightroom," can you give us some assurance that Backlight 2 will continue to integrate with LR if we want it to?
Thank you.
John
Hi Pierre,
Nice job! Your design elements perfectly compliment Luc's artwork.
I've been following your progress through your posts here, and I'm really impressed by everything that you've managed to do with Backlight. You certainly demonstrate Backlight's broad capabilities.
Regards,
John
Hi Pierre,
It occurred to me that you aren't Luc (!) so thanks for clearing that up. I enjoyed the English version of the site and I will drop Luc a note.
Rod, Matt and Daniel have been equally helpful to me, although your site includes far more sophisticated "web stuff" than what I did.
Onward.....
Best,
John
Luc (pideja),
Thanks so much for your kind comments. I've been very lucky to enjoy shooting pictures for 50+ years, and it's been a pleasure using Backlight to display a few of them.
I've been following your site through your support posts. Great work, too! I love the Caribou series! And your web technique is really impressive! I look forward to the English version of your site so I can read some of it. It's been way too long since I studied French.
John
Here's an interesting piece that speaks to the value of registering your copyright:
Insect Photographer Sues Pest Control Company for $2.7 Million
Good information. Thank you.
John
Actually, “Under the Federal Copyright Act of 1976, photographs are protected by copyright from the moment of creation.”
https://thelawtog.com/copyright-laws-for-photographers/
“When is copyright created? Do I have to register it?
“Copyright is secured automatically when the work is created, and a work is “created” when it is fixed in a copy or phonorecord for the first time. In general, copyright registration is a legal formality intended to make a public record of the basic facts of a particular copy right. However, registration is not a condition of copyright protection. U.S. Copyright Office“
The bad guys don’t care if an image is copyrighted. Catching them and collecting damages ($) is the problem.
John
Thanks, Rod.
My thinking is that the good guys don't steal pictures, and when the bad guys do, it's either too hard to find them, too much of a hassle to do anything to them once you do find them, and very unlikely you'll recover damages worth your time. As Margo says, these are the times we live in.
The good news is that the files the bad guys can download from our sites are low resolution and can't be used for much. That's not to say I like the idea of my images being stolen--I don't--but the damage done is generally not very significant (in my opinion).
If we're into telling stories, years ago a South American magazine copied pages out of an early edition of my Grand Canyon book and published a multi-page story using the photos and text from the book. I can't remember which country it was, but they have/had no copyright laws, so there was absolutely nothing to do about it.... other than be flattered that they liked my pictures!
John
Rod,
In the link you posted--http://ce4.theturninggate.net/docs/doku.php?id=phplugins_disable_the_context_menu--one thing included is:
"The notion that you can protect your images from being downloaded by using such a script is an utter fallacy; it's like hiding from monsters by closing your eyes. If you want to protect your images from illegitimate use, then your best options are either of:
"Don't put it online.
"Watermark the image, and embed metadata."
I agree completely! You simply can't prevent viewers from capturing what's on the screen, even if you can discourage downloading the image file. Windows even includes a utility called Snipping Tool that does this with ease. I'm sure MacOS has this too.
I'm curious, though, about "....and embed metadata." What metadata are you suggesting? Copyright notice? Or something that can help track illegitimate use?
John
It's "Greek," but I like "Geek" better!
John
In Backlight, at the very top menu--Backlight -- Designer -- Logout--point your cursor at Designer, then move down to Contact Forms and select that. Edit your contact form and under Invitation, you should see the text. (Graphic designers call it "Greek Text," and they use it for placeholders.)
John
Margo,
Not to belabor this, but I checked several galleries on my laptop (14", 1600x900) and they look fine. Unlike the desktop, scrolling is required, but that's just the nature of the beast. The spacing works well. (The Santa Fe gallery reminds me to back there!)
Are you aware that the link to your site--http://www.bc-fineartphotography.com/--goes to your print info page and not the home page? Perhaps that's on purpose, but the home page seems like a better place to start.
Go photograph! What a concept!
John
Margo,
I'm glad you found a solution since mine was not relevant. I didn't know about Mogrity... but now I do. Thanks for that.
All of the galleries I clicked on look very good on my desktop (large) monitor.
John
Go to Designer > Pages > Home Page > Page Copy and delete the text in the Pallet 1 & 2 boxes.
.... OR ..... if your home page is simply a gallery, then....
Go to Designer > Templates > Album Template > Album Copy and delete the text in the Pallet 1 & 2 boxes.
... OR .... if you have entered text in the Lightroom gallery setup dialog, delete the text there.
Hope this helps.
John
Hi Margo,
I've been following this thread with interest because I just went through much of this when creating my own site with Backlight. I, too, struggled with the "horizontal/vertical" issue and how that works with different monitor sizes and shapes.
I had a thought for you which may or may not work. Since you are preparing all of your images in Photoshop anyway, would it work to add the caption to the PS file rather than have Backlight display it? I don't mean that the caption would be directly on the image like your watermark, but below it within "the background color added to fool the system." This might allow viewers to see the caption and the image without scrolling for panos and horizontals. Just a thought...
John
Rod,
That's it, of course. I changed templates for my contact page (to a narrower text column), and neglected to go to the Advanced Setup to enable and include my custom.css.
So much to remember!!
Many thanks, as always.
John
Hi Rod,
Contact page: http://www.johnblaustein.com/contact/
Your page: http://ttg-tips-and-tricks.barbeephoto. … s-message/
I have a custom.css file on the server in backlight/custom. The only thing inn the css file is:
#message.success {
background-color: #c4c0b4;
}
#message.success h1 {
color: #676767;
}
Yet, I am still seeing that blue background color behind the message.
Did something change? I made a small change to my form message, but that shouldn't have caused the color change. I have refreshed my browser (Chrome) and tried Edge.
Thanks!
John
Matt,
Reach for the dictionary? What's a dictionary? A double-click and a right-click and Google looked it up for me! <g>
You studied English. I studied Anthropology at Berkeley. And look at us now talking about URLs, sub-domains, f/stops and shutter speeds. <g> I wouldn't trade it for anything, and I'm sure you feel the same way.
John
Hey Matt,
This explanation of Galleria's Expanded Mode is VERY helpful. In fact, knowing how it works explains exactly why I like it so much!! I have increased the Photos size and republished and now the images are wonderfully large on my large desktop monitor (test page, not full site yet).
In "fussing around with this" on my test page, I have learned a lot more about how Backlight and Publisher interact--Publisher looking at BL for all the Album > Image Renditions settings, and BL looking at Publisher for its settings. Your whole system is so much more sophisticated and elegant than I initially realized. I'm lovin' it!
As for "subsume," good work. I had to look it up:
sub·sume
səbˈso͞om
verb
include or absorb (something) in something else.
"most of these phenomena can be subsumed under two broad categories"
John
Hi Matt....
Yes, of course, that's it. I've been through this with you or Rod before, but I just plain forgot! My apologies. I'm sure there is a reason I set Target: Expanded, but now I don't even remember that. I think there was some trade-off between Expanded and Inline. I'll change to Inline and try and figure out why I wanted Expanded. (I'll also look back through my previous forum posts because that might remind me.)
I love Backlight more each day and week (!), but I still have a lot of subtleties to learn.
Thank you.... and best regards,
John
I have a test page:
http://www.johnblaustein.com/galleries/danube-galleria/
In LR > Edit Album > Page Content > Page Copy, I have entered the following, made with MarkdownPad2:
<p>Page Copy in LIGHTROOM Page Content -- replace template Page Copy</p>
I have tried all "placement" options. I click Edit to close the dialog, then right-click the album and select Publish Now.
In addition the the copy I've entered in LR, I have copy in the Album Template.
I can't see the copy on the published page, but I do see it in the Page Source.
Clearly, I have some setting that is incorrect--a color setting no doubt. I suspect you can see it if you look at the Page Source. Search on Page Source for "LIGHTROOM" and "INTERFACE."
(I don't think I need to create a new page and embed the album for the text that's entered in the LR album dialog to show up. I'm confused.)
Thank you.
John
Rod,
I think I've referred to you as a "genius" before, but don't let that go to your head!
I copied the TTG-Publisher.lrplugin folder into the \Lightroom\Modules\ folder per your suggestion. When I opened LR, there it was. All is well.
Thank you. Thank you.
John
I was doing a little reorganizing of files and folders and mistakenly moved or renamed the folder where I had put TTG-Publisher.lrplugin (Windows 10).
When I open LR, the TTG Publisher folder under Publish Services is now greyed out with a "?" and (missing plug-in). I know where TTG-Publisher.lrplugin in now located, but I'm not sure how to "tell" LR where it is. I'm afraid that if I use LR Publishing Manager and Add TTG-Publisher.lrplugin again, it will wipe out my current set of galleries and I will have to start all over.
Of course I had read the help file, but wasn't thinking about that today when I moved things around:
"Place TTG-Publisher.lrplugin anywhere on your system. It's location should be:
… easily accessible, to better facilitate plugin installation and updating.
… someplace the plugin can reside long-term."
Rod.... please help!
Thank you!
John
kolohe280,
Thanks very much for that explanation and information.
Rod is correct that I had asked if it's possible to select one or more albums or album sets and then republish them all with one click. While that isn't possible, your explanation about selecting an album set (containing multiple albums) and republishing all images with that set is very useful and will save a lot of time. In my case, I have two sets plus one album not in either set, so it's pretty simple. Each of my sets has multiple albums, so your one-click solutions is perfect.
Perhaps you can explain the difference between Publish Now and Mark To Republish--both on the context menu when right-clicking on an album or album set. It's not clear if they do the same thing. Publish Now starts a process when clicked, and Mark To Republish seems to turn on the Publish button in the upper right corner of the LR screen. So.... is Publish Now the same as Mark To Republish+pressing the Publish button?
John
Hi Margo,
Perhaps you saw my recent thread about migrating from Muse to Backlight. I went through just what you are doing.
As Rod points out, you have it all correct. I just wanted to add one thing: Before moving my Backlight site from my sub-domain in which I developed the new site, I created a folder in my /root directory on the server and copied all of the old site files into it. That way, I could access the old site if I wanted to. Once the old site files were copied, I deleted them as Rod described. I then copied all the new Backlight files to the /root directory and made the changes in LR Publish Services and Backlight settings as you noted. It worked like a charm!
Hope this helps.
John
