Hi Matt and Ben,
The BL2 updates installed without a hitch, as did the Galleria and Theater Add-ons.
All is well! Thanks for all of your efforts.
John
I've done a little more experimenting with Galleria 2.0.1:
Display Image Titles OFF; Display Image Captions OFF -- Titles and Captions are NOT displayed
Display Image Titles OFF; Display Image Captions ON -- Titles and Captions are BOTH displayed
Display Image Titles ON; Display Image Captions OFF -- Titles and Captions are BOTH displayed
HOWEVER... Titles ALWAYS shows file name (with extension), even when field is blank or when other Tokens are used. For example, I enter {Caption} in the Title field and the file name (with extension) is displayed. In other words, Display Image Titles can't be turned off (except when Captions is also turned off), and when it is on, it always displays file name (with extension).
Ben... I hope this helps you find out what's going on.
Thank you.
John
Hi Ben,
I'm having a similar issue to what Terry is reporting with 2.0.1.
I have Title OFF, Captions ON. Tokens is set to {Caption}. Both are displaying on the page. I only want to see the Caption.
John
Ben,
Favicon now working. Thank you.
I've done a little work in LR and BL2, adding and changing a few images and rearranging a menu item. It's all working perfectly. The new/modified BL2 Dashboard interface is clear and super-easy to navigate.
As always, thanks to you and Matt for a great product.
John
Hi Matt,
Along these lines, might I suggest you add a step for LR users to go to the Admin>Modules page and download the updated Publisher Plugin. It's easy to overlook that, and I imagine BL2 won't work with the old one (although I didn't try it).
John
Hi Ben,
OK on the favicon issue. Thanks for explaining.
All the pages are loading properly now, thanks to your enabling public_html/.htaccess. Is it likely this permission issue will come up again when you make updates available? If this happens again, is level 755 likely to work for all BL folders and files? (It looks like .htaccess is 644 and all folders are 755. I didn't check files within the folders.)
One more issue.... three of my pages should be showing photo captions, but they aren't. Do I need to republish from LR? (I have not yet installed the new publisher to LR.)
Here are the pages that should show the option to turn on captions:
http://www.johnblaustein.com/galleries/ … nube-2017/
http://www.johnblaustein.com/galleries/ … pstamatic/
Thanks again!
John
Regarding favicon, I found this post:
Upload a favicon using the Uploader. In Backlight, hover over Designer > Templates. Click on Uploaded Images. Then click on Upload New Image
Back in your Page Template, go to Advanced Setup. At the bottom of the page you'll find controls for displaying Favicons as well as Apple Touch Icons.
It seems it is set up correctly, but not loading. ? ? ?
John
Ben,
It's almost all good now.
My favicon seems to have disappeared. I don't remember how to restore that, and what I found in the docs didn't help. Please advise.
A few of my pages aren't loading--the pages without galleries:
http://www.johnblaustein.com/about-the-book/
http://www.johnblaustein.com/?page=buy-the-book (why the "?page=" in this URL?)
I visited each page in BL per the install docs, but still these issues.
John
I can't get into BL at all, so I can't click on anything.
I am sending you my admin login via email.
John
Ben,
Still problems....
I was able to log into the installer and BL installed successfully. When I clicked Continue to BL, I get this error:
Something went wrong
Unexpected error: Undefined index: language_code in 95-include-2.0.0-1-203-menu_63.view.template on line 14
If I go to johnblaustein.com, I get this error (which you'll see if you try it):
Something went wrong
Unable to find index page.
Now what?
John
Ben,
Email just sent.
John
Ben,
Thank you for the instant reply.
No luck. The .htaccess and index.php files were already in the correct locations, but I transferred them again. FileZilla shows the date and file size at matching--your unzipped folder and on the server. It's still not working.
Any other suggestions?
Note: I have saved copies of my Custom, Data and Galleries folders on my hard drive. Is there a way I can "start over?"
John
Hi,
BL1 has been working perfectly for many months.
I purchased and tried to install BL2, but I've had no success. I have read the Installation & Setup and Upgrading docs several times. I watched Matt's very helpful YouTube video several times.
I unzipped the Backlight-2-Installer-100.zip file into a new folder. The folder contains: backlight(folder), .htaccess, index.php. (There is no Galleries folder per the video, but I didn't want a new one anyway since I already have the existing one.)
Per the instructions, I deleted everything from my current BL installation except for the Custom and Data folders, and the Galleries folder. My root directory is public_html.
I copied backlight(folder), .htaccess, index.php to the root folder, overwriting what was there.
I go to johnblaustein.com/backlight/installer. I get a message about permissions and read the doc about that. Using FileZilla, I set permissions and check all the boxes for the backlight and galleries folders. FileZilla says 777.
Now, when I try to access johnblaustein.com/backlight/installer, Chrome says page isn't working. I tried deleting my history and cookies. No luck. The Chrome address bar shows this:
johnblaustein.com/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/backlight/installer/
My cPanel shows that my server is using PHP 7.2 (ea-php72). My web host is www.westhost.com and I have shared hosting.
I'm stuck! Not only am I unable to install BL2, but my site is no longer accessible.
Please help.
Thank you.
John
Backlight 2 and plugins will come with discounts for existing customers. Bear in mind that this project has been going for 18 months with hundreds if not thousands of hours put into it and that what we charge so covers support and feature upgrades for the life of the product.
Perhaps those of us existing customers who are thrilled to be using Backlight 1 and have taken major advantage of the "free" support should pay a premium for the upgrade to Backlight 2. Matt and Ben can offer discounts to attract new customers.
*** No, I'm not really serious, but I am trying to be sensitive to the fact that The Turning Gate is a very small company--it's no Adobe--and that the prices are already very fair. And if you've used this support forum, you know that help is usually only a few hours away.
John
If one compares the cost of Backlight to any other full-featured web design application, what Matt charges is a huge bargain. And, if one weighs ease-of-use against that cost, it looks even better. Adobe CC, Capture One, Microsoft Office, Quicken and others have gone to the subscription model, and the long-term cost there can be substantial.
Just my 2c....
John
Thanks, Rod.
Everything is now working fine!
When I look at public_html/backlight/modules/pangolin-theater, it shows the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<module xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="../../designer/module.xsd">
<productSuite>pangolin</productSuite>
<identifier>pangolin-theater</identifier>
<name>Pangolin Theater</name>
<type>album</type>
<version>1.2.5</version>
</module>
That looks to be version 1.2.5. It's working, so I won't change a thing.
Thanks again for your help. (And Daniel.)
John
Do I need to re-install Galleria and Theater?
I have installed Backlight 1.2.3.5 per the readme.txt file. I also installed TTG-Publisher.lrplugin version 3.2.3.1.
So far, so good -- everything is working correctly.
By the way, the Dashboard page only shows 1.2.3.
Thank you for the help!
John
Rod and Daniel,
Thanks for checking the site. Here's a Dropbox link showing the error message when I try to log into BL and when I click on a couple of my pages:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hn9dzkt6cdg5 … wKhUa?dl=0
I have tried both Chrome and IE on two different Windows 10 computers.
Rod.... I am using VERSION 1.2.3.4. (public_html/backlight/modules/pangolin-page)
John
Hi,
I am getting an error when trying to log into Backlight:
Something went wrong
count(): Parameter must be an array or an object that implements Countable in SimpleHTMLTag.php on line 44
I log in with: http://www.johnblaustein.com/backlight/admin/ This login has always worked before. My host just updated PHP to 7.2.
I'm not sure what to do.
Thanks for any help.
John
UPDATE 1:
I see that some of my pages are not loading correctly. For example: http://www.johnblaustein.com/about-the-book/ This link opens Backlight with the same error message. The link should go to that page on my site.
Same issue with: http://www.johnblaustein.com/contact/ Other pages do the same thing.
ERROR ON SITE SEEMS TO BE INTERMITTENT! However, BL login is always returning the error.
What's wrong? How to fix?
UPDATE 2:
I just checked with my web host and they show no problems on their end. They updated to PHP 7.2 on August 1, but my site was working fine right after that. I only noticed the problem today. (Host is www.westhost.com)
Ben,
Thank you. I appreciate your efforts to keep Backlight running smoothly for us.
John
Thanks, Rod....
I appreciate that Ben keeps Backlight compatible with the changes that our web hosts throw at us. (I'm a novice and I don't even know what PHP and MySQL are, so I'm extra happy that all of you do!)
John
Hi Rod,
Yes, my host will let me continue to use PHP 7.0, but only for one month. They say:
"Starting July, 2018, WestHost will be upgrading our servers to PHP 7.2. This is considered a minor PHP upgrade. Our servers will allow one month to revert back to PHP 7.0 and correct any of these issues before PHP 7.0 is permanently removed. Essentially, this will allow clients with any code issues to run the older PHP version while updating their site."
So, I will have to use 7.2 soon.
John
Hi....
My web host (westhost.com) just emailed to say they will soon be upgrading PHP and MySQL as follows:
PHP will be upgraded from 7.0 to the latest version of 7.2.
MySQL will be upgraded from MariaDB 10.1 to the latest version of MariaDB 10.2.
Will these upgrades create any issues with Backlight? If so, what should I do about it?
Thank you!
John
Thanks, Matt!
That sounds ideal.
John
