#1 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Hero Images_custom thumbnails? » 2020-05-26 12:31:47

Hero custom thumbnail is not what I intended to term and I should have asked about to used a custom cropped Hero image.

So, I've tried making my own HERO custom crop image (at just the pixel dimensions I want) and putting it in the "custom_thumbnails" folder and then going to ->Edit Album -> Base Settings ->Cover Image ->Custom
...And and that works nicely for a custom HERO thumbnail but now that becomes the thumbnail back in my galleries and I lose
all those nice thumbnails of the photos people area about to clickthrough. I love regular thumbnails of all the photos, ...guess this is not the way to use a Cover Image as a Hero Image.

I'm just trying to display my Hero Image in a specific custom way rather than, ..top, ..center ..bottom ..left ..right.
It's fine to crop manually in a photo editor and use that as a custom Hero Image ..wouldn't everybody think that would be an awesome feature to choose exactly how your Hero image looks?

I love the idea of a Hero image, but want to be able to control what the slice of a photos is and be able to feature a face instead of an elbow or whatever randomly shows up when I choose from the available settings like: position X -> center, position Y -> Top.

Here's a link (custom cropping a Hero image)

Thank you Terrance. Thanks, Rod. Thanks, Matthew. Your insights give me something more narrow to work toward cause I do love the Hero images and you all give me good suggestions to try when I get an hour or so. I'll be back with info in a few days with what I've learned.

#3 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Hero Images_custom thumbnails? » 2020-05-17 02:40:43

Hilarious, Rod.  ...but I don't wanna be a face cutter. I'll be testing out how to make custom images for Hero images. Thanks for the suggestion. Backlight 3  is very very cool. (bought all the add-ons, too.)

#4 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Hero Images_custom thumbnails? » 2020-05-17 02:10:29

I downloaded Matt's video and got rounded corners looking nice. Great option.

I'm going to be trying to test how I can get the Hero images to a specific slice area. It's just not a good look when someones face is cut off or all you see is a shoulder close up. It's kinda amusing ..in a way. But I want hero images to be faces or where I have a bit more control. I'm in no hurry but customization of the Hero images slice area or if I can use custom thumbnails for Hero images in the future ..wow, that would be be EPIC HERO.

I love the Hero image option. I like that it's customizable. and I really like the default rectangle size of X=2 and Y=1.
Problem I have is when a photo is grabbed I just want a specific slice area.

So, is there a way to use random say 5 custom thumbnails for hero images for each gallery?
Some images lend them selves being more "heroic" than others, especially when I just want someone's face
inside the hero rectangle.

I'd also like the option to give some rounded corners to hero images. But I'm loving using Hero images because it breaks up the
thumbnail boxes and it's really a good design eminent! ~Awesome!

#6 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Redirection » 2020-03-01 02:39:54

Yes, ..that's a good point of distinction!
The index.php and .htaccess files found in the unzipped Backlight folder go into the Backlight folder on your server. Make sure these are the ones, anybody trying to do this. Don't be in a hurry if you're confused. Take a breath and go reread what Rod said. It's very clear what to do.

Then do as Rod suggested about Updating Backlight Index files from with the your Backlight dashboard.
-This is awesome and I'm learning more every time I screw up. Thanks, Rod. ..a bunch.

Awesome! This issue is fixed and has been totally resolved. - I'm so glad users can redownload Backlight and purchases. Issue is Now I got my "Galleries" showing up on Top Level of my website domain like I wanted without a landing home page.
Now my site goes directly to Galleries.

Here's what I did to add to what you did in helping with my URL Link to specifics you mention in your above post, Rod. And it worked:
I redownloaded Backlight. Logged into my ftp and choose to show hidden files. Then .htaccess file showed up.
I took the index.php and .htaccess files from the unzipped Backlight-installer folder and then used ftp to place them in the folder on my server called "Backlight". These two files that were messed up yesterday go replaced with the original Backlight installer ones and Bam! ..everything's great.  ..better really.
You are awesome Rod.

#8 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Redirection » 2020-02-29 14:02:16

Rod, could you please explain how? I too, want my homepage to start as my Galleries page.
https://www.garybrackin.com

I tried but goofed. https://garybrackin.com/galleries works but many of the Menu items links found at http://www.garybrackin.com
now lead to the error:
"Paradox 404!
You've found a page that does not exist."

And going to my main site garybrackin.com
now shows the error:
"Something went wrong
Unable to find gallery.xml. The gallery can not be found. in GalleryController.php on line 561"

Rewrite redirects that I tried using my cPanel did not work. And so what caused the goof was when I logged into Backlight and changed my Backlight Settings (Site URL.   https://www.garybrackin.com    to go to.  https://www.garybrackin.com/galleries) and when I did that I see by going through FTP that my lib.php and my index.php were replaced and now I'm stuck. ...uh, a little help please?

If I could just go back to how I had things this morning, I'd be happy. ..or if there's another way to easily republish or do whatever you suggest.

#9 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Add Photos-> error: Upload failed » 2019-07-28 21:10:37

I was actually curious about those three variables on my server, Ben. There are so many choices on server php.ini files that I didn't know what to mess with. And you're right, Ben. I'm uploading full-res  300dpi 9"x12" photos through Backlight and don't really need that much for viewing online.

I was doing it for print and download delivery to clients. It may be too much and for that. I'll make a zip folder and make a link to download or maybe buy TTG Cart and see what I can come up with there. I don't really need to be forcing Backlight to do all the resizing of originals. I'll get them closer to the template size and that will be great. Using the larger images, I do get the larger thumbnails and I do like that. -Thanks Ben for the details. You're always right on.

#10 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Add Photos-> error: Upload failed » 2019-07-28 11:08:00

Yea, I had read that info earlier today and have made some changes to my php.ini and it's been a while since I uploaded to my site.
It's nice getting back into all the little nuances and customization that can be had with Backlight.
Thanks for your suggestion, Rod. Helpful as always!

#11 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Add Photos-> error: Upload failed » 2019-07-28 08:48:19

Problem Solved!

Yup, the file size mb or the screen dimensions were causing these photo uploads to fail.
When I kept the dpi at the same 300dpi but scaled the height down to a reasonable 2048 pixels high, everything uploads just fine.

It's a lot to ingest full-res and choking the upload.
So, when I need these big images to be downloadable, I'll just make a 2nd version and make a link manually and paste that markup html (or markdown) link manually in the text copy area.

Is there documentation somewhere that describes the max that the Backlight publisher upload can take. I'm sure I have it noted somewhere but don't know the specifics.

#12 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Add Photos-> error: Upload failed » 2019-07-28 07:59:49

Ah, ha.
-Looks like either the photos dimensions or the mb size is causing the error.
Cause when I save those same photos as 72 dpi with all EXIF metadata, -all 7 of 7 photos upload successfully.
I took the big photos, made copies at 72 dpi, and they do fine uploaded in another gallery
http://www.garybrackin.com/galleries/tw … oads-work/

So, what should I be looking for as as far as staying below the max ceiling on uploads?
As far as my server goes, I think what I'm doing is fine.
And as for my TTG default template, it should be downsampling whatever I upload that's too big. And I think Backlight is working correctly. ..just maybe something I'm doing wrong. ..This is a new camera to me by the way and my first test uploading with it. Nikon z7, 300 dpi, most cropped smaller to 9"x12"

I'm trying to add photos to a gallery and some upload fine and some fail.

I've tried dragging and dropping, and by browsing to upload, and have tried single photos and multiple photos.
I'm not sure what the uploader error is, no other info is given but it looks like it gets up to 99% when it fails.

Photos are between 17-25mb and normally the uploader always works until today.
I saw lots of the TTG items have updates and I installed them just now but the error still happens.

Possibly a few of my photos are corrupted but Photoshop and Capture One Pro open them.
I've tried saving new jpg versions of them. Also removed all EXIF data using using a program called "Photos Exif Editor" for Mac.

The server host is HosGator. And I'm using PHP 7.1 and browsers are Safari 12.1.2 and Firefox 68.01. Mac Pro running Mojave 10.14.6 and all of this has not changed from weeks ago when there were no issues so I'm not quite sure why photo uploads fail.
I've cleared the TTG templates cache constantly.

Here's a link to the gallery, and 3 of the 7 photos are successful.

Any suggestions or issues anybody sees here? -Thanks!

Thank you, Ben. Point well taken.
I'll give them a stern talking to while you and Rod get: my praise and thanks!

#15 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Unexpected error: Module 'SourceGuardian' already loaded... » 2019-03-02 12:58:57

Hey, Rod. Thanks so much. You're always so very helpful ..probably to everyone here.

I am not on Bluehost, I'm using HostGator. But logging into my cPanel at my website, I saw they had switched on a new version of PHP 5.6.something  and I reverted back to PHP Stable 5.6 and all the pages and issues fixed themselves immediately. My thought was that is was my server, ..but wasn't sure if it was a Backlight issue. Backlight was not the cause, my server PHP version was the cause.

Thanks again. In the help file you link to above, you could suggest that customer's servers should be using STABLE releases of PHP and even if they haven't made any changes, check to test if changing PHP may solve this specific server error.

#17 Re: Backlight 2 Support » my html links don't work (Page Copy section) » 2018-12-13 00:30:12

Thanks for the tip, Matthew! A good amount of developers I talk with use Visual Studio Code. I'll give it a try. I'm on a Mac and Atom or Coda is what I've been using and I shudda been using that instead of a text program. Wrong move.

If you ever find yourself in Austin, TX ...free place to stay. ..I wanna pick your brain and make awesome food. Maybe never happen but thanks so much for your helpful help. I need to be more active on here now that I focus more on Dev and coding.

#18 Re: Backlight 2 Support » my html links don't work (Page Copy section) » 2018-12-11 23:56:56

Right on, Rod!
Just tried my ahref codes in serval html editors and one even showed up as double curly quotes.
So i went into Atom code editor and everywhere I saw a quote I retyped it in the editor.
And WhaBANG, links work!

I need a big red sign on my desk, ...use proper code editors to type code.

Thank you so much, Rod. You are always incredibly helpful. As are Matt and Ben.

I plan on buying more TTG items again, to help support you guys, more!
Cart and CRG are the last two things I need to update.
Long-time user since TTG 2011.

#19 Re: Backlight 2 Support » my html links don't work (Page Copy section) » 2018-12-11 23:38:57

I uploaded and did a Template Refresh and emptied Cache of my browser,
Recopied code and pasted in Coda and it works, now.

I had copied html code and quotes from the internet but saved it in Coda code editor.
Think all is well, whatever happened and won't any more.

Man, you guys are fast with the help. Thanks so much!

#20 Re: Backlight 2 Support » my html links don't work (Page Copy section) » 2018-12-11 23:33:13

Here is my actual code from the Page Copy section. I made the code in an editor, Coda for mac.

In Backlight2, I'm trying to add html links in the Page Copy section.
<br> When I add a html link, it does not lead to where I say. It goes to the link but adds the path to it's gallery to the beginning of the link, so what I get is a a 404 Paradox! error.

For example, here is a simple .jpg photo link, that goes to the wrong link.
<a href=“http://www.garybrackin.com/assetts_garyimages_logos/GBP_card.jpg”> Link to a photo</a>
<br>

The link should be going here:
<br>http://www.garybrackin.com/assetts_garyimages_logos/GBP_card.jpg
<p>
But it goes to the wrong URL, here:
<br>http://www.garybrackin.com/galleries/html-links-don-t-work/“http://www.garybrackin.com/assetts_garyimages_logos/GBP_card.jpg”

The gallery talked about below has been removed but I left the text here unedited for others to read.

Well, maybe my old no-longer used email,
two codes fell through the crack.

-Theater
-WP Theme

I sent you an email and you can delete this post after that ..or maybe you want to keep this post.
But you might want to change the title of the post so not everybody goes here looking for other info
not related to discount codes.

-Thanks, Matthew.

Oh, after sifting through my old email ..I found some discount codes.
So, looks like there does need to be new installs for the Backlight 2 add-ons
and I'll be purchasing them today.
Thanks, everybody!

I'm using Backlight 2 without Lightroom and I love it!
Thanks for the hard work: Matthew, Ben, Tom, Rod, ..and others.

Do I need to purchase new versions of: Client Response, Theater, Galleria to work with Backlight 2?
I own them for Backlight 1.

Thanks, again. The logic used going into BL2 is great and it is much easier to use ..and quicker
when making additions, customization, or changes.
