Hi,
Is there a way to create a password for the index site?
I will customize the site for different clients and want them to use one password upfront for the site and not for the albums.

I haven't tried this, but see if it works:
Create a password protected album and insert that album into the index page.
If that doesn't work, try .htaccess password protection: http://www.htaccesstools.com/articles/p … rotection/
however, if you're using the Client Response module, then you'll need to use its password implementation if you want the full benefits of client management.
