what is negative space for and why to use it (or not)???

It contains all the page content to the max width when the browser's viewport is larger than the max width.
with it off, the navigation container and header span the width of the browser.

Give it a try, you'll see what it does.

It basically allows you to surround your design with negative space, hence the name. You can apply margins to your design, etc.
