Search has died on me ...

As part of my transition from CE3 to CE4 the replacement gallery structure was created.  The CE4 Pages was installed.  Search was working - and very impressive.

I started the process of converting the AutoIndexes and Galleries to the wanted templates - around a quarter of the job was completed.

A batch of around 10 galleries were being "recompiled" under their Autoindex when I had a Lightroom 5 error message - An internal error has occured - metadatahandler:2155 c stack overflow.
Despite this message the process of creating the working AutoIndex completed (but very slowly) and all of the Galleries were created and could be viewed.

I continued processing the remaining AutoIndexes/Galleries - they all appear to be working normally.

However when I tried to test the Search option it failed to respond and eventually gave this error message

quote
Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.(where is this?)

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
unquote.

Perhaps this can be resolved by using the file rebuild option in Publisher Admin -  your suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Search has died on me ...

post it here so that Ben and Matt will be able to look. They're the ones best able to troubleshoot

Re: Search has died on me ...

this page will help you find the logs you might need:
http://ce4.theturninggate.net/docs/doku … g_for_help
and I'll move this over to the Publisher topic so Ben will be more likely to see it.

Re: Search has died on me ...

Internal server errors are tough nuts to crack, as the errors occur prior to our code running and hence prior to us being able to capture the error or log anything useful.
Can you provide me with FTP access so that I can try to work out the underlying error? Please do so via the Email link under my name.

Thanks Geoff. I will look into this tonight Melbourne time.

I tried replying to your email but received a delivery failure message, something about your account not existing.

Re: Search has died on me ...

Hi Geoff,  I've had a thorough look through the TTG code on your server.  What it comes down to is that PHP is failing on some select queries.  The internal function to query the database is crashing.

At risk of incorrectly assigning blame, this looks like a bug in the version of PHP or the PDO module on your server.  Your server is currently set to use PHP 5.5.23.  Can you try following this guide and setting the version to 5.4 for the domain?  http://help.1and1.com/hosting-c37630/sc … 92330.html

See whether that then fixes the search.

Note that if that does in fix the search, that I would not say that TTG has a compatibility issue with PHP 5.5, but that the particular version on your server has a bug.

Re: Search has died on me ...

Post mortem.

Following several escalations it was established that changing php to 5.4 made no difference.
1&1 suggested that it may be a PHP memory problem - but provided no useful feedback to enable this to be verified in any way.
My package for the web site was set up in 2010 - before CE versions.  This package gave me 50MB of PHP memory.  1&1 upgraded my package to a new "Unlimited plus" package with 80MB of PHP Memory.

This has resolved the problem of the Search - it now works.

Thanks to Ben for his efforts during the investigation process.

Re: Search has died on me ...

I'm glad that you're back on track.  Thanks for going through the wild goose chase of alleged PHP bugs and PHP versions - all a matter of guesswork without error messages to go by.
