Resolving xxxx-single.php - .htaccess issues

Hi there,

I do some photography as a hobby, and have recently started setting up my website.
My setup:
1. CE4 Gallery, CE4 Auto Index, CE4 Pages, CE4 Stage, and CE4 Publisher
2. IN CE4 Gallery, I have set up Highslide Slideshow for desktop and Touch for mobile, and have enabled permalink button to be displayed in slideshows
3. I have created required templates for Gallery, Auto Index and Stage, and use Publisher to push out the albums to my website - http://rajivkhanna.photography/

When testing my site, I noticed permalink button generates xxxx-single.php link which comes up blank in the browser. Example - http://rajiv.ph/1EvCikw

Did a lot of research on the forum and came across another post from Sep 2014 where Ben provided a fix to the .htaccess file - http://community.theturninggate.net/post/23026/#p23026
In the post Ben said that it was being tested and had not been pushed out yet.

I tried this fix on one of my galleries, and lo and behold the single.php links started getting resolved!! Example - http://rajiv.ph/1IGwWpb

So my question is whether I should consider this "fix" as final and cascade it to all .htaccess files via Publisher Admin, or is there another, final fix?

Thank you,

Rajiv

Re: Resolving xxxx-single.php - .htaccess issues

Hi Rajiv,  this is a tricky one.  I'm not comfortable in pushing out that change to all our customers.  The existing htaccess code works for all but two known cases.  How many the new version will work for is unknown - it could be considerably fewer.  Another factor is I don't understand the code in that adjusted htaccess file.  As such it would be reckless to push it out to everyone.

Having said that, since you've found that it works for you, it should be perfectly safe to apply this change to all of your galleries by using the Update Album Files link.  The only downside to maintaining the htaccess file yourself is that you'll need to re-edit the file ttg-be/publisher/application/skeleton/gallery/htaccess after Publisher updates.  However, as CE4 Publisher is stable, that is now infrequent.

Re: Resolving xxxx-single.php - .htaccess issues

Hi Ben, thank you for your quick response.

I have made the change to the template file and cascaded via Update Album Files. All galleries are now resolving single.php links. Now I just need to remember to make the change again if and when there is a new release for Publisher. Will likely put a Readme.txt file in the folder where I store downloaded plug-ins.

Your email below does make me wonder what is unique about my setup that there is only one other similar situation that you have come across. In any case I am glad you found a fix for this seemingly unique situation. Thank you.

On a side note, I am thoroughly enjoying using the CE4 suite of plug-ins. Absolutely brilliant software!

Re: Resolving xxxx-single.php - .htaccess issues

Hi Rajiv,

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying our software.  It's great to see you put it to good use. Your site and photos look fantastic.

The way the .htaccess file finds the single.php depends on how paths and user accounts are set up within hosting environments.  In your case, the server is not able to locate single.php.  It needs a more explicit location, including the path.  The extra and changed lines in the tweaked .htaccess file provide this information.  The big question is whether these extra lines and passing the path will cause issues on hosts that don't require the path to be added.
