Galleries & Videos

Rebuilding an old CE3 site to be inline with Backlight 2 standards.
The original site was bilingual (two sections) and had only three pages: Home, Gallery and Contact.
http://marccharlebois.com/
The HOME page has been rebuilt. Now, on to the GALLERIES page. On this page, I need to have thumbnails of the different video clips, with a brief description. Each thumbnail leads to the video clip proper.
As in the original site: http://marccharlebois.com/marc_en/galleries.php

I set up the navigation correctly (I think) but I get the dreaded 403 message! There is a Pangolin album module and a Pangolin theatre module installed.
I just can't seem to link from the home to the gallery.

Re: Galleries & Videos

Is this the site you’re working on: https://pideja.ca/marco ?

Is so, have you created the French and English sub-sites and populated them with albums?
Because your navigation goes to the sub-sites. To the French galleries page, for instance:

 https://pideja.ca/marco/Fr/galleries.php

Re: Galleries & Videos

For the moment, only the French side is being populated. I copied all the video folder within the videosrc folder.
Then, I guess I should place all the album thumbnails in the galleries folder, no?

Last time I built a site like this was when Okapi was still around, so I'm a little rusted.

Re: Galleries & Videos

you'll need to create new albums before the Galleries page will show up. You can't just move thumbnails. The database needs to know those albums are there.
And the act of publishing to the galleries folder is what creates the Galleries page.

Re: Galleries & Videos

OK so, I exported the main page template from pideja.ca/marco and imported it as the default template for the album template as well as the theatre module template hoping to keep the basic design of the opening page.

But when looking into  Publisher/Top-level galleries/Galleries, I see that the Galleries are using the default template and I can't change that.
I already created an empty album "Histoire à faire peur" but I can't see it on my ftp client and of course it won't show on the site.

Re: Galleries & Videos

The Galleries page uses an album set template, not an album template. Create an album set template and assign the page template to it. Then assign that album template to the Galleries album set.

Re: Galleries & Videos

If you want the Fr page to be an album, then it should probably be the FR site's home page with an album embedded in it.

Right now, your link goes to the Galleries page, which is an album set.

Re: Galleries & Videos

As suggested, I linked the menu item Fr to the main page in pideja.ca/marco/Fr and assigned it the imported template ( marco - pages.txt) create for the portal pideja.ca/marco.

It doesn't look much like the portal but it's black and the footer is ok.
I created a menu set containing only ACCUEIL (Home), PRODUCTIONS (Galleries) and CV+CONTACT. But, this is not reflected on the page ??

Not too sure how to proceed from here: do I insert an album set or an album within the Home page? Basically, I'm trying to replicate (and improve) on this design: http://marccharlebois.com/marc_fr/galleries.php.

Make sure you assign the menu set to the page template.

If you want the galleries page you can do one of two things: Make the link go directly to the galleries page or insert the galleries album set into a home page and link to that home page. But you'll need to have created the Galleries page by having published albums to it.

What I don't understand, among other things, is that I exported the template from the main page (pideja.ca/marco) and assigned it to the main page in the Fr version. And yet, they don't look the same and have different ID numbers.

The MENU issue seems resolved, partly. For now, it's a one-way street! The Productions and Contact links are off.

Re: Galleries & Videos

the two page templates are using different custom css files. That's where the red is coming from, for one thing. Probably other differences as well

Re: Galleries & Videos

Now, the same CSS in all templates. It's a start...
Got the Main page to link to the PRODUCTIONS (Gallery set) page and back to Main (Portal).
I now have published one album via Backlight. Thumbnail looks immense and doesn't lead anywhere.
Trying to figure out how to link to that Pangolin-theater (video) page.

The video clip is at http://pideja.ca/marco/Fr/videosrc/lie.mp4 but the thumbnail leads to http://pideja.ca/marco/Fr/galleries/histoire/ Seems to indicate that the structure on the server is wrong.

I have taken the liberty of including the file structure on my ftp client. See anything wrong?
ftp
Note that the thumbnail "histoire" is the thumbnail for the video "lie"

make sure that the album has the correct video id and you've set up the site for video

Re: Galleries & Videos

Having a really hard time with creating an album set directly in Backlight.
So, I am reverting to do it in Lightroom, as I am used to this method. Also, can't find where to indicate the video ID in Backlight.
Now, it's Lightroom that won't recognize the API! The URL is https://pideja.ca/marco/Fr/backlight/data/publisher/  and I set a four-digit Key. I get an error message "Error performing function. (Code: 403)"

Re: Galleries & Videos

to great an album set in Backlight, go to Publisher.
Click on the name of your top level gallery
Click the Create Album Set button

Same process for creating an album.

If you don't have a top level gallery yet, you can create one in Backlight Publisher

http://backlight.theturninggate.net/doc … acklight_2

To indicate a video ID in Backlight, first create an album and assign a Theater video template to it. Then edit the album. Under the Page Content tab (just like in Lightroom) enter the video ID.

wrong url. Should be:

Re: Galleries & Videos

API

Changed the API Key, just to make sure.

But, the good news is that I'm making headway on the Album Set/Albums front. Following your guidance, I created these with Backlight and they look ok. Thumbnails are still gigantic, but I should be able to edit that (famous last words).
After completing the ten video albums, I'll do the Contact page...

'Till then, happy trails to you...

Re: Galleries & Videos

It is now...that was the problem in LR. But since I've started publishing with Backlight, I might as well carry on don't you think?
And thanks for solving that LR issue. I now know I can fall back on LR if need be.

Re: Galleries & Videos

One thing to keep in mind, albums and album sets you create in Backlight are not manageable from Lightroom and they won't show up in Lightroom.
However, if you create albums from Lightroom and then make changes in Backlight like page copy or assigned template, those changes will appear in Lightroom.
If you have an album created with Lightroom and you add images via the Backlight Publisher, those images will not appear in the Publisher collection in Lightroom.

So when you create an album, whether it's in Lightroom or Backlight, you should plan on managing it the same way you created it.

Re: Galleries & Videos

Thanks for this information.
Since I think TTG might break off completely from LR, I'm trying to build this site entirely from Backlight.

Looking at the Album Set page https://pideja.ca/marco/Fr/galleries/, two things bug me: that "gallery" inscription to the left. Is that a breadcrumb? I disabled that feature so why is it there?
Also, the name "Marc Charlebois A.S.C." appears where I would like the nameplate that appears on the Home page to show.Is this a case for CSS or can I swing this in Backlight?

That's from the top-level gallery settings. You can disable that from there.

Not sure what you mean. Do you want the galleries page to appear the same as the home page?

Re: Galleries & Videos

About that Masthead setting in the Album Set page, I'd like to change that name (it's actually the Company Name in Backlight settings) to an image (name-plate) similar, but smaller than the one on the Home page.
Something along the lines of this, in the CE3 version of the site: http://marccharlebois.com/marc_fr/galleries.php
I am trying out some text on that page, but I'm not too sure if it would be better suited for an "About" page. Anyway, that masthead image should go over the text, in lieu of the name that appears now.
