Rod, it appears that it was a plugin that was causing issue with the update of wordpress. I disabled all plugins via phpadmin and lo and behold, it works now!

Hi Rod,

No, I wish I knew what plug in it was. I had to disable them all and there were quite a few. I only enabled about 3 .. so I obviously wasn't using the others (maybe 25 of them were active for no reason) ...
However, if anyone else has this issue I rectified it by disabling all plugins and then adding one at a time back the ones I knew I needed.

If you're curious (or a masochist) you could start enabling plugins one by one until the problem returns. But as they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
