Three years and a major revision of Backlight, I'll make this feature request again:
I'm looking to add some cleanly formatted metadata output under an image on single-image pages (not photoswipe).
A quick search of the forums suggests older versions of CE don't support metadata line breaks either via HTML or a special token/tag.
Has any progress been made with support for linebreaks in Backlight?
It would be super useful to be able to enable simple linebreaks to help group similar metadata together - even better would be to allow markdown in a multiline textbox.
My ideal layout would be:
{Filename}
========
{Caption}
------------
Keywords: __{Keywords}__
Captured: {D3} at {T1} by {Creator}
Location: {Location}, {City}, {State}
Negative Number: {Headline}
Photo Release Status: {ReleaseStatus}
Thank you for a tremendous product. It's been transformative in how I work every day with clients and co-workers. The inability to generate cleaner formatting of metadata on single-image pages is my only real gripe in an otherwise seamless integration between Lightroom and web galleries.
did you find this only on the Backlight demo page? That's the only place I could find it. If you see it on others, post back so Matt can fix those.
I'm seeing the links on this page:
http://backlight.theturninggate.net
on the left-hand nav.
When clicking on the search icon in the navigation menu bar, the search text box is shown as expected. However, the search text box isn't in focus and isn't ready to accept text input - This is confusing for my users. While user testing, all of them first try typing a search term when presented with the text box, and those who weren't touch-typists, looked down and started typing, completing the word without realizing their text was getting lost.
It would be super helpful if the cursor is at the search text box is immediately ready to accept text input, without requiring the user the extra step of moving their mouse cursor to the search text box and clicking the mouse button.
Thanks!
Looks like there are some 404 errors on the website:

we really can't add checks for esoteric environments
I understand - but even just a quick note/caveat in the documentation or installation notes about a default config CentOS LAMP stack not working without disabling SElinux would have saved me hours of troubleshooting.
I don't have direct control over my CentOS VM, can't easily turn it back on without getting other folks involved. Next time another VM is spun up, I'll check this out.
Thanks for the suggestions, Ben! I validated the permissions are correct (tried both 755 and 777) on data and data/sessions and still no dice, the error persisted.
I disabled Nginx and installed Apache on the same CentOS VM again to eliminate the server daemon as a possible source of the error, and same error was displayed even with Apache.
One of our sysadmins suggested SElinux could be the cause - SElinux is enabled by default on RHEL distros like CentOS. Once SElinux was disabled and the VM rebooted, Backlight functions as expected, no errors.
If there's any way to catch this condition (SElinux) and produce some more useful debug/error reporting it might save you on support queries as Backlight continues to move into the enterprise/commercial market.
Also, I didn't see php-xml on the list of Backlight dependencies; searching the forums for "php-xml" returns no results. While attempting to install on my CentOS VM I received a (different than above) non-specific error message telling me to contact support. I was able to trace it back to the lack of php-xml package in my environment. Once the php-xml package was downloaded and installed, all is perfect.
Thanks again for wonderfully useful product and super quick support!
I've found Backlight to be wonderfully portable, rsyncing the web path between a staging and production environment was completely painless until now.
I have encountered a hiccup recently when attempting to implement on a server stack with Nginx on CentOS; below is the error message the browser spits out:
session_start(): open(./backlight/framework/../data/sessions/sess_bc0o36kfrehq8bpgsaet32j7k3, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13)|#0 [internal function]: ErrorHandler::handleError(2, 'session_start()...', '/usr/share/ngin...', 74, Array) #1 /usr/share/nginx/html/backlight/framework/helpers/AuthHelper.php(74): session_start() #2 /usr/share/nginx/html/backlight/framework/init.php(120): AuthHelper::handleSession() #3 /usr/share/nginx/html/index.php(19): require_once('/usr/share/ngin...') #4 {main}|URL: /index.phpUnknown: open(./backlight/framework/../data/sessions/sess_bc0o36kfrehq8bpgsaet32j7k3, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2)|Unknown|0
I've tried changing permissions (777) to no avail - are there any other steps I should take, can't find a lot of guidance in the forums re: Nginx as a http daemon for Backlight. I've tried with Apache on this CentOS VM as well, same result.
Thanks for any help or hints, I'm kind of out of ideas.
I suggest hiding albums from album sets until the album is ready to be shared.
Yes, that's what I will be doing - but it makes using Smart Albums a little less than... smart.
I make extensive use of Smart Albums. Smart Album settings seem to be sticky/persistent in Lightroom until Lightroom is restarted.
Backlight has the notion of importing/copying Smart Album and Album settings from an existing Smart Albums and Albums. However, it appears Smart Album matching rules are imported/copied. It's a real drag to have to recreate my rules every morning (I shut down Lightroom nightly).
My rules set is fairly limited at the moment, with only 5 rules, but I see this growing as I discover new "smarter" ways of leveraging my existing metadata tagging to automagically generate new and useful albums for my clients.
Even more potentially useful than importing previous Albums, would be the notion of saving Album and Smart Album templates, and applying templates to existing Albums and Smart Albums. I loath to think of having to update hundreds or thousands of Smart Albums with new rules.
An example of one of my Smart Albums:
I've noticed that if I create an Album in Lightroom which doesn't contain any photos, it displayed in Backlight as a null image (border outline is shown, but no image) because there are no photos - see attached image for an example.
It would be very useful for there to be a default image, user definable via Backlight web admin, to be used in cases where an album contains no images.
My use case is that I make extensive use of Smart Albums, and I may create a Smart Album for a shoot where no images are yet approved. Once image(s) are approved by client or administration, a star rating is applied, which would automagically have one or more images appear in the Smart Album.
Terrific, thanks!
New here, what is the preferred method for bug reporting?
Backlight appears to fill a need I've had for a very long time, certainly since LrD v1 - a searchable web gallery that effortlessly and automagically gets updated when photos are developed and metadata is refined in my digital asset management software. I'm only on day two of using Backlight, but very excited about what this could mean for the display of professional and personal photos.
