Hi there,
Just wondering about searching with " " (exact phrases).
On my site I search for "West Coast" and I am returned results for "North West Coast".
Shouldn't these be excluded? And should I only get images returned with meta data equalling "West Coast" ?
Or am I understanding this incorrectly?

I search for "West Coast" and I am returned results for "North West Coast".
That's normal. Works the same at Google and other search tools.
The specific text you want to find is contained in the result you're showing.

Yes was just wanted results for West Coast so I put them in quotes, as in "West Coast" and expected only the exact match of "West Coast' to be returned, not "North West Coast".
Will read up further on rod link.

That's what was returned: items that included the text "West Coast". Compare that with just searching West Coast without quotes and you might get results like West Indies or Gold Coast, neither of which include the full search text.
Out search doesn't provide a means to search for the complete value of a field. E.g. If your full description was "West Coast" then there's no way to search for that without also getting results where the full description is "North West Coast".

Chumby - have you considered using “Northwest Coast” instead of “North West Coast”? Would that correct the search issue Ben?

Thanks Terry for the idea, but the area is known as North West East, East Coast, West Coast etc. I could change the keywords, but hence no-one would search for Northwest Coast, as it is not known as that.

When putting a phrase in quotes, the search function is searching for a specified string. And it will return results that contain that string. The only way you can eliminate other words is by specifying those words in the search parameters
if you wanted to conduct a search for "west coast" but wanted to eliminate the keywords north and south, use:
"west coast" -north -south

I can put that search string in the link I have for "West Coast". That will help for people browsing my search list but I doubt anyone browing my site would type in that full search string.
I wonder if there is a way if someone types in "West Coast" I could create a condition which then defaulted to the search "West Coast" -north -south ? That would be dandy.

I don't know, but you could add some instruction on your search page (or in a pop-up box on the search page) to let visitors know about the search options
