Hi,
I'm trying to redirect all the not found pages (404) to my home homepage. I'm interested to redirect even the not secure connections to existing pages, but not to force everything as I could do in the admin settings. I tried in different ways, all in the root/.htaccess but it's not working

.htaccess would be the way, I reckon. Google should have plenty on this. Here's the most recently updated article I was able to locate with a quick search:
