Secondary masthead not initially drawn

I have a BL v1.2.3R3 website rick.samcos.com whose secondary masthead doesn't initially show on its WordPress pages (i.e., all but gallery pages). The secondary masthead does then get painted if I rotate the device so that the primary masthead shows instead, then rotate back. It usually then continues to show as you navigate between pages, but can once-in-a-while disappear again upon page/site reloads. If I update any page in WordPress I can reliably get it to fail on the next page load. My secondary masthead is only used for small mobile displays in portrait orientation, so that is where this problem is exhibited (tested on Iphone 6 & 8, both Chrome & Safari). So, while holding a phone in portrait mode, go to website and you shouldn't see the masthead until you rotate phone to horizontal and back.

PS This is not a new problem -- it was there in v1.2.3 if not earlier. I was hoping the v1.2.3 release 3 would rectify...alas.
PPS Does anyone else find BL's release numbering confusing? Why is newest release labeled "v1.2.3 release 3" instead of "v1.2.4" (or "v1.2.3.3")?

Re: Secondary masthead not initially drawn

It works for me! But the image for the secondary header is big ~660k. It is too big for what it should be. It took a while on my phone to load it! I opened it in Ps and it shows as 16-bit. Once I cropped it to the text area and changed it to 8-bit, it comes in at 40k.

Re: Secondary masthead not initially drawn

I see what you mean. I can only see the upper half of the mobile masthead initially in portrait mode. After rotating though, everything is smooth. Check on my iPhone 6 in both Safari and Firefox for iOS.

But I'm also seeing the same thing as Daniel. I don't think the image needs to be 1080px wide either. Try cropping it to the text and set alignment to left in the Secondary Masthead setup.

Re: Secondary masthead not initially drawn

Boy, I should have noticed the large file sizes ... thanks for pointing that out! BUT they're small now (20K & 40K for reg and retina PNGs) and the problem persists. AND I'm noticing that the secondary masthead (when it does display) is vertically padded differently in BL (i.e., gallery) vs WordPress (i.e., all other) pages.

Re: Secondary masthead not initially drawn

What's happening for me is that most of the time (Not always), your mobile masthead doesn't appear. I have to refresh before it appears.
This is not the behavior I'm seeing on a test page I've set up to basically do the same as your site. One difference is that my image is 48px tall (originally created to fit in top pallet)
Yours is 1080px x 73px and needs to be scaled down. Yours certainly doesn't need to be 1080px wide for an iPhone.

Re: Secondary masthead not initially drawn

OK, reduced secondary masthead image size to 25x275 and 50x750 (iPhone pixel width dimensions, reg. & retina). Problem still persists at times -- always occurs if you (while in portrait orientation) go from galleries back to home page. And now left and top padding space both different between BL and WP controlled pages.

Ummm...didn't make any changes, but now only fails very infrequently for me. Padding problem is always there.

Re: Secondary masthead not initially drawn

I don't see the padding problem at all when on iPhone and going between regular pages (WordPress) and Backlight pages (Galleries page and albums)

This is the type of thing that happens when the browser is caching elements of the page, such as the images and CSS.

After making changes to a site, flush the browser's cache before testing.

Re: Secondary masthead not initially drawn

Another thought having to do with caching. Are you using a caching plug-in with WordPress? If so, try disabling it while making design changes.

No caching plugin ... browser caches were flushed.
