Error when publishing to Backlight

Hi, Has anyone had this error appear through a Lightroom publish of 12 or more images 'Can't update this Collection' error uploading rendition.(Code:403) This has only just started appearing and the publish upload stops. I don't know whether the problem is Lightroom or Backlight. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Cliff

Hi Cliff, that sounds like something to do with your host.  Firstly who are you hosting with?  Are you able to continue publishing after a certain amount of time?

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

I'm having much the same trouble.  upon updating my albums in lightrrom, I get the message;

CAN'T UPDATE THE Collection
The rendition could not be created.  Please ensure that the original file name is accessible, especially when stored on external or network storage.

I have tried so many things i'm now lost.  Including reinstalling Backlight.
It is  happening to the galleries in my Album set   See    http://hookephoto.com/galleries/galleries/  only a couple of images will publish.

The images I have on my theatre Page and homepage will upload/publish.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thom

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

that error implies that the original file could not be accessed to create renditions for the site. Are the original images accessible? are they stored on a drive that's not connected?

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

Hi, Can you clarify a little bit? (same problem here). I have renamed my files to custom names and it's vital that I be able to use those names. The renames need to be in the same folder as originals? One or the other version needs to be deleted? Should I export the custom name versions, re-import and re-create an album of those images? Thanks

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

Your renamed images need to either be renamed in Lightroom or imported into the catalog.
If you need to rename images you've already published, you should remove them from the albums first (or just delete the albums if you're renaming everything) then rename the images in Lightroom and re-create the albums.

Thanks Rod! You led me to the right tree to bark up, as I learn this excellent system. One file needed some renaming among my only slightly scrambled files.

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

Do you mean it created an album but didn't upload the pictures? Have you tried any of the solutions above?

Take a look at Ben's question at #2 above.

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

looks like you've had success with other albums. Is there anything different about this album?

Are you having Lightroom create large files for download?

Anything else you can tell us about what makes this album different from your others?

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

I too am having the same issue,
I have a very large album (3200 pics). LR has uploaded about 2300 of them, but now every time I try to upload the remaining I get the same 403 error and text about the rendition that has been mentioned in other posts.
I have tried meta data only and that fails with the same error when I try an update.

Is there a log file somewhere that provides more information about the cause of the problem?

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

There are logs for both the LR Publisher and back-end.  The former can be found in the ttg.log file in your 'Documents' folder of your Mac of PC.  The latter can be found in the backlight/data/publisher/logs/ directory, with a filename corresponding to the date that the entries were logged.
We had previously used those files to help debug issues, but their value has decreased significantly with better error reporting with the LR Publisher.  That is, the underlying error is almost always now displayed in a pop-up alert within Lightroom.

What error are you seeing in Lightroom?

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

changing from meta data only to photos, it is at least working 350 into the update, whereas it died on the first one doing meta data only

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

403 is the HTTP code for 'forbidden' but it can be kind of a catchall. Have you contacted your provider? Maybe their software thinks you are attacking their server with too many requests and has temporarily blocked your IP.

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

Latest error is
Can't update this collection.
Error uploading rendition. (code 403)

Charlie, I hadn't thought of it as necessarily as an HTTP response code, but as some internal code.   HTTTP response code makes sense.

Re: Error when publishing to Backlight

I am not sure of the meaning of the "403".  This is an error our Publisher throws within Lightroom before attempting to send the image to your web server.
Strangely, the exact message should read "The rendition could not be created.  Please ensure that the original file name is accessible, especially when stored on external or network storage.", not including 403 anywhere in it.  Can you post a screenshot of the error?

As the message implies, this is likely because the original file can not be found.  On that, make sure that the drive holding your original files is available, and includes all of the files you're trying to publish.
This could also arise for any reason that causes Lightroom to be unable to create the rendition from the original, such as your hard drive being full, or Lightroom failing for any other reason, such as not coping with such a large export.

The Lightroom Publisher plugin that shipped with Backlight 1.2.2 Release 3 includes some extra logging for this scenario.  If you haven't updated to this version, I suggest doing so, then trying to raise the error again.  Once you've seen the error again in LR, check in the ttg.log file for information on the full path of the file that could not be created.  The extra logged line includes text with "unable to create rendition for" followed by the full path of the filename.
