Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

I have enabled Breadcrumbs and also enable showing a "Home" Breadcrumb. This works in all of my Galleries and Auto Index folders, except for the "main" entry point auto index. On that page there are no breadcrumbs.

Site is: http://pfredd.com/ce4test/gallery/ On that page you will not see Breadcrumbs. Click on any of the Albums or Album Sets and you will see Breadcrumbs.

Any pointes to fix this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

that looks to be a non-Publisher managed autoindex page. I believe that only Publisher managed Album Sets and Albums can have breadcrumbs.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

How do I publish an Auto Index?

Since it's the base page in my site, I was just FTPing the Auto Index Template to that folder.

Also, can I use Publisher with Stages so I can get Breadcrumbs on those pages as well?

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

yes, you can create Stage templates for Publisher.

How do I publish an Auto Index?

set up a top level galleries folder and publish an Album Set to it

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

OK - I found this: http://ce4.theturninggate.net/docs/doku … _home_page

I am totally confused.

I use Pages and ftp those pages to: http://pfredd.com/ce4test.

I created a folder named gallery (for historic reason) in ce4test, and FTP my auto index template to it.

I will have other folders in ce4test that will have Stage pages as well.

I set up a CE4 Publisher instance. It's API URL is http://pfredd.com/ce4test/ttg-be/publisher/. I set the "top level galleries directory" to 'gallery'

I then publish Albums and Album Sets using this publisher instance. This all appears to work, except there are no breadcrumbs when viewing the "gallery" folder.

Am I doing things correctly?

why are you creating a folder named gallery when pages makes a folder named galleries/ that is fully compatible with using Publisher and breadcrumbs?

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

I have it in gallery because before using  CE3 I used other software that had my photos in a folder called gallery. Because others  expect my photos to be in the gallery folder, I continue to use it.

I guess I could publish to galleries and make a symbolic link to it called gallery.

Will breadcrumbs work with Stage pages as well?

Would it be possible to publish Stage templates that have breadcrumbs as well?

I use gallery because I have used a folder called that for years, and that is where people expect to find my photos.

Will Stage pages show breadcrumbs as well?

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

you can label the link Gallery and have it go to the galleries.php file, which indexes the galleries/ folder. You can call it whatever you want, but the url will end up being /galleries.php

Breadcrumbs work with Publisher managed albums and album sets. Stage is compatible with Publisher (and it also has a breadcrumbs styling section in the Output Settings control pane), so it can use breadcrumbs as long as those pages are managed with Publisher. Breadcrumbs don't work with stand alone pages.
See Matt's Stage demo here: http://ce4.theturninggate.net/demos/ce4-stage/
it has breadcrumbs.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

So how do I set things up so that I can publish my Stage pages?

Again, my Home page, http://pfredd.com/ce4test, is created with Pages.

I have Menu items for a photo gallery (gallery folder), projects (Stage pages), blog (wordpress), and a couple of one-subject pages that may not have any photos.

I would like my Breadcrumbs to be: Home >> Gallery >> (album), Home >> Projects >> (project name), Home >> (Single Page Name), etc.

How do I set this up? From what I have been messing with, it looks like everything has to live under "galleries"....

It's looking to me like CE4 was not designed to support Breadcrumbs in this way. I was able to do this in CE3 with a highly modified version of Daniel Leu's phplugins Breadcrumb code. So maybe that's what I need to use in CE4. Then, like in CE3, I will only use Publisher to manage my photo albums.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

Dig down from here: http://ce4.theturninggate.net/demos/

You'll see our breadcrumbs running through a folder called "demos", exported using CE4 Auto Index.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

export and upload an Autoindex (call it Projects) to the same server level at ttg-be/
Set up a new Publisher instance aimed at that Projects autoindex
create Stage templates for Publisher
Create Stage albums with breadcrumbs using the new Publisher instance

the Stage pages will have breadcrumbs leading to Projects (and Home, if you've enabled that) because the Projects autoindex is now managed by Publisher since it's the top level gallery

I just set this up on my test site. The Workshops link goes to an autoindex. This autoindex is managed with its own Publisher instance. The one page in that index is a Stage page created with Publisher http://ce4.barbeephoto.com

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

OK - Now I understand.

I thought I had to use Publisher to publish the Auto Index in the "projects" folder, and I couldn't figure out how to do that.

Will give it a try tonight.

Thanks!

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

OK - I did as I was instructed, and it mostly works.

My problem is that the Projects page doesn't have Breadcrumbs. I created an Auto Index page and FTPed it to the Projects page on my server. The one Stage page DOES show the Breadcrumbs.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

If you want Projects to have breadcrumbs as well, I believe it needs to be an Album Set with a publisher managed index (or another album set) above it in the hierarchy.

Just like the Galleries page in Pages doesn't have breadcrumbs leading back to Home, neither will other Publisher top-level galleries. At least that's how I'm seeing it. Ben will correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, I do want Projects to have Breadcrumbs.

How do I make it a Publisher managed Album Set?

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

One way I can think of is to create an Album Set in the galleries/ folder and check the box to hide it from the autoindex (so it doesn't show up on the Galleries page)
Then just change the URL in your menu to /galleries/projects/

The thing about breadcrumbs is that they offer an way to navigate back to previous pages that aren't otherwise on the main navigation menu (multiple levels of album sets, for instance). Since the only thing above your Projects page is your Home page, and it's already in the main navigation menu, breadcrumbs on the Projects page leading to Home seems rather redundant.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

It's not THAT big of a deal, I guess. But if you are going to implement Breadcrumbs, why not have them on every page (except for Home)? If I like navigating with Breadcrumbs, it's inconsistent that they aren't on every page.

I can always go back to using phplugins code, like I did in CE3. But I like the fact that, in CE4, I can set what I want the Breadcrumb for a page to be, where the phplugins code uses the directory name.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

My guess is that it's easier said than done. And that's probably why it's done through Publisher since Publisher has access to the galleries.xml file (actually, to the database with the new ttg-be) and can extract urls under its control.
Otherwise, anybody wanting breadcrumbs would be forced to implement it through phplugins and not everyone is comfortable with that.

Re: Base Auto Index Gallery not showing Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs exist where it makes sense for them to exist. For example, Galleries is NOT under Home. It's on the same level, and that's what you site navigation is for.
