I wish to build a new replacement website using BackLight 2, at the same keep my CE4 site operational until the replacement is ready.
Would using a sub domain be the best way to approach ie; backlight.davidbuddphotography.com and could I configure Publisher using a sub domain
Once the Backlight site is completed what would be the process to make it live using Bluehost.

Yes you can do all this. When ready, just move the files and change url settings in Backlight settings.

Not really. It's actually easier when updating from BL1 to BL2: http://backlight.theturninggate.net/doc … acklight_2
My process for updating from my Backlight 1 site is that I've created a subdomain for design where I'll test designs and create a custom css file and phplugins file.
Once I'm happy with the designs and customizations, I'll update the Backlight 1 site to Backlight 2, using the procedure in the link.
Then I'll put in place my phplugins and custom css files along with any other extras, like images to use inline in places like my About page.
From my development site I'll export all the templates I've created and then import them into the newly updated BL2 main site. Then it's a matter of assigning new templates to existing pages, album sets, and albums. Hypothetically, there should be no downtime. Should be.......

That sounds good, if you know what you are doing - I don't. ?
Also, I need to redo my web site from scratch so I will not be able to use my present BL templates.
It would be nice if I could do it all in a subdomain because I know there will be many "ooops!" and then when finished move it all to the root.

You can do that. In fact, if you don’t need to preserve your current site, designing in a sub domain and moving it to the root could be the easiest

I would leave my current site as is until I finished the new site. So there would be no down time. Any special tips re: BL2 in a subdomain?

In the subdomain? just design as you normally would.
After moving the development site to the root, you'll need to log into Backlight and change the Site and Company URL. Change the WordPress URL too if you were developing themes.
If using Lightroom to publish and you plan on keeping any of the albums you published in the design process, you'll need to change the API url in Lightroom Publisher Settings.

How about the custom.css and phplugins file? There is no need anymore to manually change the path in the phplugins file when moving it from the sudomain to the domain like it was in pages 4?

the path to phplugins is no longer used. That was used with CE4 and previous.
Just upload your phplugins and custom css files to /backlight/custom/phplugins and /backlight/custom/css/ folders
phplugins and custom css files are now enabled and chosen in the page templates. It's so much easier.
