Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

Hi.

Presently I have some problems with my german words including letters like "ü, ä, ö, ß". In the CE4-Version no problem, but in Backlight it shows me questionmarks instead of the letters. What can I do to change that?

For me one of the best things with Backlight is: I can use it from everywhere I am. I am so often not at home and don't have my Lightroom with me. So now I can use my sparetime to make changes to my homepage without having Lightroom with me. That is so nice stuff!

Regards Kai

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

I don't think there's an option yet for choosing the Character Set (probably on Matt's to-do list). There is a Language option in Settings > Miscellaneous, but the info tooltip indicates that it's language for text in the cart (future cart). But give that a try and see what happens.

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

Hi.

Thanks for the info.

I just saw that most letters are ok.

The word "Umläufe" is displayed correct as "Umläufe". But the word "Ausflüge" is not displayed correctly. It should be "Ausflüge" but instead of the "ü" I have 2 questionmarks "??". But only in the top level of Galleries, not in the album sets below. There the words are all correct. That is quite strange.

When you migrate from CE4 to Backlight the master.sq3 file is just copied. So when it is correctly dislpayed in CE4 then there must be something wrong in Backlight to show it correct.

Regards Kai

PS: I mean the text next to the pictures in the album sets gallerie.

Hi Kai, whereabout in the page or on your site are the characters coming out incorrectly?  Can you provide a link?

I have tried editing my album to include the text 'Ausflüge', and it appears fine.  Do you think this issue only pertains to text in migrated albums?

Hi Ben.

Here a screenshot:

It happens in the main gallery-page. When I click one of the galleries to get to the next set, then all letters are fine. It is just here in the top-level.

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

This is how it looks in CE4:

I checked it in both master.sq3-files. Everything is similar.

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

Likely this isn't the source of the problem, but out of curiosity, in CE4 what setting were you using for Charset in the Page Setup? (should be one of the very first options in the plugin)

Did you keep the default utf-8, or did you change it?

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

Hi.

I did not change it. Funny thing is, why is that only wrong on the gallery main page? When I then open "Umläufe" and entering this album set there everything is fine. These pages generated in CE4 have all the same page setup.

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

It might be a text sanitization problem when reading or writing the Album Title/Description from/to the database.

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

But I checked it within the master.sq3. And the word is correctly in as "Ausflüge".

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

That your word came out in the above comment with weird characters, makes me think it had come from a non-UTF8 source in the first place.
Does updating the text in Publisher work, and is there much text with this issue?

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

Ok, I did now several things. First I put the same word in again in this text at another position and the other "Ausflüge" was displayed fine.

Presently my text is: "Z.B. Ausflüge" and this is displayed wrong. German "Z.B." stands for "for example". So next I removed the fullstop point after the "B" and now it is working.

Then I changed the "Z.B." into other things like "D.A." or "Z.A." and always "Ausflüge" is displayed wrong with the questionmarks.

So there must be a problem in Backlight when you have letter.letter. in front of a word with a "ä, ö ü, ß". Because when I change "Ausflüge" to "Ausfläge" or "Ausflöge" it is the same problem, questionmarks.

So letter.letter. is doing something that the word after is not displayed correct. Problem wasn't in CE4.

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

Thanks for the explanation.  I'm not able to reproduce it though.  Just to clarify, are you entering this text via the  Description field of Publisher's album settings?

Here's an example where it's working for me: http://backlight.somethingchanged.com/galleries/
Can you post other text I should try?

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

Hm, that is strange.

In Lightroom Publisher I go to the settings of the album set where I change it. After that I load it up.

Later I will start my PC with Lightroom and try further where the error could be. Or can you enter the whole text like in my first screenshot and see if the error comes?

That is the cool thing now, you can just use the ipad to change settings of the homepage and don't need Lightroom for that.......

I send you a screenshot in a second where I changed it that it works.

Re: Problem with German Text ü,ä ....

So that is quite funny. I put in just "Z.B. Ausflüge" and it worked like in your example.

Then I tried something else. I deleted a letter in the text that is in front of "Ausflüge". Then it is displayed correctly. I put in one more letter into the text in front of "Ausflüge" and it worked as well.

Try it by yourself please. Copy&paste this text: Hier findet ihr alles andere, was in die anderen Kategorien nicht passt. Z.B. Ausflüge, Feste und sonstige Events.

When you see the questionmarks remove a letter in front of "Ausflüge" or put one more in. Everything is fine. So it is funny because the letter "ä,ö,ü,ß" must be on a special position in the text that you get the questionmarks instead of the letter.

It is such a rare problem that it normaly is no time worth to look for but nevertheless I am curious what it can be.
