This page isn’t working error page

I have 4 local sites that I use to test my websites before publishing. especially one that iI wanted to experiment with Backlight 3 changes.

Since the update, when I clear template cache, update album files or update index files I get a blank page with the following message

This page isn’t working
xxxxxxx.site didn’t send any data.

ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

It is only on two of the 4 sites if I then use the back button I get the dashboard back with a success message bar.

I have restored the sites from early backups( the experiment one from a good time ago. Still getting the error page after the update. I also get it after performing each update.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

I have just restored the site to Backlight 2 and it works fine cleared template caches etc multiple times and no issues. But as soon as i upgrade logoff logon and then clear caches etc I start getting the Error page. It is an HTTPS local site. I am not prepared to update the live sites until I understand this issue

Re: This page isn’t working error page

Just a guess, but maybe a server issue. Perhaps a needed php module isn't active. What version of php are you running in your local environment?

You could always create a test site in a subdomain to see if it works in your online hosting environment. That way, if there are still problems, Ben could take a look.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

I'm afraid I can't offer advice on a local site that we can't see.  The error is unknown to me.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

It is only on two of my local sites and only occurs after upgrading to Backlight 3. So it is not any of the local server settings that I can see, as two sites work. Unfortunately, it does not give me any confidence to update the live sites.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

Can you provide access at all?  As it stands, a site that we can not see on a server that you manage, I don't know what you expect us to be able to do to help.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

I understand the problems with providing help. It's just that it works until I upgrade then I get the errors. The only commonality between the two sites that don't work is they were created using Backlight 2. The two that do work have been around in one form or another since CE3. I think the issue is related to HTTP and https. Woking sites are both HTTPS the two that cause problems have been tried as HTTP and HTTPS. I may try to rebuild the test site from scratch using Backlight 3, Can you point me to a reminder of how to do it. Its been a long time

Re: This page isn’t working error page

Don't know if it helps but I sometimes see this when I go to the login page https://test-ttg.site/Backlight/admin/admin/login/ (still see the login page though
But not on the other misbehaving site. Redirect htaccess issue?

Re: This page isn’t working error page

/backlight/admin/admin/login is actually a valid URL, although that's not a URL that Backlight should send you to.
The first 'admin' refers to the main application you're in, and the second to the 'admin' controller of the application.  BL2 and 3 suppress the second so that it should not appear for aesthetic reasons.  In other cases, something like the 'admin' controller of the 'publisher' application looks more presentable, at /backlight/publisher/admin.

A new fresh install does the same thing.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

Ok last comment / request for ideas. It is independent of HTTP or HTTPS. I tried both and changed suitable URL settings. It is independent of Browser tried three.

If I get the error page and request a refresh no change but if I click anywhere in the address bar and press return then the correct page opens.

Mac running apache php 7

Re: This page isn’t working error page

no, Bilt in apache and installed PHP as default install does not have some modules missing. I cannot understand nor see any difference between two working sites and none working other than working started life as CE4 but none working started life as Backlight 2. There is no difference in the host file between all sites. hosts file the same as well (other than site name)Its almost as if the page is trying to return to the Dashboard before something is complete

Re: This page isn’t working error page

Can you share a screenshot of what you're seeing?  To do so, you'll need to upload an image somewhere, then link it with the img tag, e.g.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

This first image shows the landing page and that https is working. The third shows backlight admin and that after Clearing Template Cache the page is returned to the Dashboard and that HTTPS is working. The second image shows the failure to return to the Dashboard after updating the album files. If I then click on the address bar and press return then the page is updated to the dashboard

This is slightly changed behavior this time as previously Clearing Template Cache did the same thing, however, the gallery page is now corrupted (missing styling). This is after restoring Backlight 2 testing with no issues then updating to backlight 3

Re: This page isn’t working error page

As i couldn't see any difference between the sites that worked and those that didn't. Nor could I see the difference between Backlight 2 and Backlight 3. I decide to do a complete overhaul of my apache setup. Because I didn't do it incrementally I cannot say which change fixed the issue but it appears to be now fixed.

One thing I did notice as i was comparing sites was the Backlight Installer folder had different versions of files, they looked as if they were the original when that particular Backlight was created. my oldest site had what looked like Backlight 1 installer files and another Backlight 2 installer files. Are these actually used or are they redundant once initial installation is complete?

Re: This page isn’t working error page

/backlight/installer is only part of Backlight 2 and 3.  The installer files should be interchangeable.  For example, the installer that ships with Backlight 3 will install a Backlight 2 site if you haven't purchased Backlight 3.  We don't notify users of updates to the installer files,  as any changes are only minor improvements that aren't of general interest once you have a site up-and-running.

The installer files aren't redundant after installation is complete.  They also provides a way of making emergency recoveries should any of our updates through Backlight Modules break your admin in your environment.  If you visit /backlight/installer/ and go through the installation on a working site, it will replace all of the core files without resetting any settings.   I have not tested normal upgrades with the /backlight/installer directory removed, so can't guarantee that the site will function without it.

Re: This page isn’t working error page

Thanks just a general inquiry. I was looking to see if I could explain why my site worked on backlight 2, not 3 and why some sites worked and others didn't. Don't like not being able to explain why even when it looks like its fixed

Re: This page isn’t working error page

Since we can't see your site and determine how your environment and setup have influenced things, there's no insight I can add.
