No doubt about that one smile

Take a look at Matt's announcement newsletter and today's blog post.

The design elements are basically the same. There is added functionality for those using Backlight Publisher. More customization options are available to those who code.
Backlight 2 is frozen in development, so any new features will only be in Backlight 3

Thanks for the link. And in fairness, you guys did send an email notice but I seemed to have deleted it. And I promise I normally read and hold on to those notices so the email was deleted in error.

And yeah, I'm not the least bit shocked that Backlight 2 is now "frozen in development".

And to be honest my main issue is the upgrade asking price every 18-24 months. Again, owning the fact that we don't have to upgrade, but still. I think those of us that are willing to upgrade from one version to the very next one should be offered a steeper discount.

That said, I'll probably upgrade to this version, still.... I think that's a suggestion worth considering.

Thanks guys. And as always, I respect and appreciate the quick replies. It's why I push your product to others looking are asking about a photography website builder. And... you do make a nice product smile

Peace:)

Question?

What is the major difference between Backlight 2 and Backlight 3 that I should spend another $100 dollars (with $35 dollar discount) for this upgrade?

Yes, I'm keenly aware I "don't" have to upgrade.... but if we do what are we gaining over Backlight 2?

This is NOT meant to be adversarial. Thanks.

I have no understanding of the things - BL1 is compatible with PHP 7, but BL needs PHP 5.4 or higher? (what?)

Anyway my control panel has no particular version ticked, thus my confusion. This is Bluehost.com

This error is due to you running PHP 5.2.  Unfortunately, the error comes up before Backlight has had a chance to even check and warn about the version.
Backlight 2 needs PHP 5.4 or newer.  5.2 is very, very old.  Who are you hosting with?  You should be able to change the version of Backlight from your hosting Control Panel.   I can advise on how to do that with Bluehost, if you are with them.

So let me get this straight, in order to run BL2 I need to have PHP 5.4 or higher enabled in my Bluehost control panel? How would this affect BL1?

Thanks.

OK, because I don't know where to post this.

I've currently got Backlight + Pages, but notice Backlight 2 has no pages add-on?

Is pages now included in Backlight 2? Being I have Pages with Backlight one, do I still need it for 2? If so, where and how to get it.

Thanks.

#7 Re: Backlight Support » Unable to choose Pangolin-theater » 2018-07-25 02:31:03

It's nothing to do with Pangolin.

And as for theater my site is working fine without so I'm good. I was just going to give it another try but since I have to create Pangolin pages, I might as well do my site redesign. And since I'm planning a redesign I'd rather wait for Backlight 2 since it may provide more tools and options over Backlight 1. That's the point.

Thanks.

I expect we'll be making announcements sometime fairly soon. I can tell you, though, that Pangolin lives on in Backlight 2. Therefore, feel free to start using Pangolin now; there will be no need to redesign your templates for the new release.

I don't have a problem using Pangolin, I welcome it. But if I'm going to redo my site I might as well start from scratch with Backlight 2.

Thanks.

#9 Re: Backlight Support » Unable to choose Pangolin-theater » 2018-07-23 05:57:49

@ rod barbee,

That answers my question. Being the lazy type right now I'll leave the design as is, and forgo theater for now in anticipation of Backlight 2.... whenever that comes out.

@ Matthew,

Thanks. Any word on Backlight 2?

Thanks guys smile

rod barbee wrote:

What version of Backlight are you running?)

I posted it in my initial post - I.2.3, release 4.

rod barbee wrote:

You create a Pangolin page template the same way you create an Okapi Page template.
Go to Templates. Under Page Templates click Create New Template. Under style, choose Pangolin Page.

Wouldn't that require me to redo the entire site again? Under Pangolin this time? I think I started with Backlight version 1.0.3, prior to Pangolin.

rod barbee wrote:

If your site is still using Okapi based templates then yes, you need to keep the Okapi modules.

Yes, I'm guess I'm still using Okapi based templates since that's where I started as stated above. Can I "convert" without recreating the wheel again so to speak?

Thanks.

#11 Re: Backlight Support » Unable to choose Pangolin-theater » 2018-07-22 23:23:32

I suppose not, but I'm not sure what you mean? How would I create a "Pangolin page template".  And my site was created with Backlight before "Pangolin" was released, which is why I'm guessing I still need to keep the okapi-core module???

Sorry, I'm probably confusing things.

rod barbee wrote:

When you go to create a new Album Template, under the Type drop-down you should be able to choose Pangolin-Theater

Should be, but not. And I am following the instructions here: http://backlight.theturninggate.net/doc … -on_basics ….

  • In Backlight's menu, go Designer ⇒ Templates.

  • Scroll down to the Album Templates list, and click "Create New Template".

  • Name the template, and for Type choose "Pangolin Theater"; click "Add".

Problem is I get no "pangolin-theater" option, just "Backlight Theater" as stated in my first post.  And I am running the theater 125 update.

#13 Re: Backlight Support » https » 2018-07-22 22:15:03

There seems to be a consistency issue going because I'm also getting the unsecure notice. However I've notice that if I log into backlight admin and clear template cache (again), the issue clears for a couple of hours than returns.

Any ideas???

For some odd reason I'm unable to choose pangolin-theater when trying to create a theater page.

I "had" theater installed but wasn't using it so I deleted it awhile back. Just now installed Pangolin and couldn't get any theater items to show.  Reading instructions about okapi, I then deleted pangolin-theater, installed an old copy (104) of theater, then installed pangolin-theater again. Now backlight theater shows, but still no pangolin.

How to fix?

FYI, I still have an okapi module installed (okapi-core) despite having the latest version of backlight pages installed (123. Release 4)

Thanks.

Edit: Yeah, I cleared the template cache.... a few times.

#15 Re: Backlight Support » https » 2018-07-22 12:12:34

Not sure what you mean?

Anyway that's the same banner (nameplate) used throughout the site, yet only the search page comes (came) up unsecure. Oddly enough now the site appears to be working (secured) after going to backlight admin and clearing the template cache (again). And this SSL test site also confirms all it good (now) - www.whynopadlock.com (suggested by bluehost's tech support).

Earlier it flagged the page bad with basically the same error message you posted.....

A file with an insecure url of "http://www.exposedvisions.com/backlight/designer/?c=page&a=image&p1=5" was loaded on line: 68 of https://www.exposedvisions.com/backlight/search/.

This URL will need to be updated to use a secure URL for your padlock to return.

Now I get a "Pass" checkmark with "You have no mixed content." after I cleared the template cache (again).

Will keep an eye on this and let you know if any more weirdness pops up.

Thanks.

#16 Re: Backlight Support » https » 2018-07-22 01:02:11

Read post #31 and see if it works for you.

Anyway all the pages on my site is secure except for search page. Don't know what's going on there and I can't seem to find a setting to fix that one page.

#17 Re: Backlight Support » https » 2018-07-21 12:34:34

OK, so I thought I had this fixed but just discovered my Search page is coming "Not secure"  - https://exposedvisions.com/backlight/search/

What am I missing cause I can't seem to find the settings to fix it?

Thanks.

I put it in the Modules folder and it automatically shows up without the need to use the Plugin Manager

Good tip and one I'll remember the next time I need to set things up.

Thanks.

It seems that plugins in the Modules folder get picked up automatically. If LR 4 doesn’t already have one then I doubt that will work.
LR 4 is pretty old and I don’t recall how things were set up.

I believe the installation instructions basically say you can put the plugin anywhere and just use the Plugin Manager to install t.

Hmmm... I simply dumped mine in (My) Documents folder since the instructions says put it anywhere. No issues.  I'm running the Creative Cloud version of LR.

#20 Re: Backlight Support » https » 2018-07-17 06:02:08

Thanks Rod. Had to figure things out myself today since Bluehost was no help. This thread actually helped me put it all together.

BTW will new versions of Backlight (Backlight 2) or whatever the new name moving forward use https by default?

Thanks.

#21 Re: Backlight Support » https » 2018-07-17 04:40:57

For clarity, and those using Bluehost.com...

To enable https for your site you’ll also need to edit the htacces file as described in post #3 (http://community.theturninggate.net/vie … 289#p47289)

The code goes here as shown in the red box....

htacces%20code.JPG

After saving the file, then go to your backlight admin panel and navigate to Backlight > Settings. Scroll to the bottom and click on Show Advanced Settings.

Click Edit Settings and change both the Company and Site URL’s to "https" (no quotes).

Scroll down and if you see an htacces file, edit it as you did the first file.  If you do NOT see an htacces file, it may have already been edited. Regardless, once done, click Save settings. Lastly, clear template cache. That’s it, all should be good, and you should now be using https.

Note that editing the htacces file and changing the backlight settings to https must to be done for https support.

For Bluehost.com, the support the code is:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://example.com/$1 [R=301,L]  (substitute example.com for your website)

Hope this clarifies; though I'm sure the software authors probably has an easier more efficient way.

Peace:)

Hey guys, I'm looking to do some major changes to my site and am wondering how to do so offline - i.e. makes changes and review before going live. I'm sure (hope) it can be done, I'm just not clear on how and what's needed.

And yes, this is the latest version of Backlight.

Thanks.
